In that culture, it is believed that health is a result of \u201cPono\u201d or right living and that the loss of harmony and balance caused illness. Traditional Native Hawaiian practices were based on <\/span><b>holistic healing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which the <\/span><b>mind, body and spirit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were viewed as one. Before a patient was treated, the <\/span><b>Kahuna<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(master secret healers of old Hawaii) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performed a ritual of Ho\u2019Oponopono (making things right), a type of counseling to <\/span><b>cleanse the mind and heart of negative thoughts and feelings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The importance of a Kahuna:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the native Hawaiian community, a Kahuna served all equally and with respect. The Kahuna was involved in every aspect of community life, healing mental, emotional, and physical illnesses as well as resolving broader disagreements. By mediating between the spiritual realms and the community, a Kahuna maintained a necessary balance of harmony. Healing took place in different ways, at different levels. <\/span><b>A Kahuna could often recognize and dissolve potential problems before they occurred<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If a disease did not respond <\/span><b>to la\u2019au lapa\u2019au (herbal remedies), lomilomi (massage) or la\u2019au kahea (healing chants),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> then that disease was considered to represent an imbalance in the community<\/span><b>. Ho\u2019oponopono (family healing)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might be required.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_media_grid grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1606915078931-9a1aee88-c73c-6&#8243; include=&#8221;3750,3751,3752&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From generations to generations:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Native Hawaiians navigated to the Hawaiian Islands, where they lived and flourished for centuries, carrying on the cultural traditions they brought with them and innovating new ones. <\/span><b>Education was sacred<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The kupuna (elderly) would seek an apprentice (mostly still a child) and would be sent to live and study with a Kahuna from as young as five years of age and they would spend upwards of fifteen to twenty years in training. During this time, they studied anatomy, learned how to diagnose disease, how to choose the right cures or medicines (especially medicinal plants) and learned sacred prayers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The arrival of Western people and missionaries however, introduced laws in 1920 which forbid ancient native Hawaiian practices, dances (hula*), chants and language. The Hawaiian training had to happen secretly within the families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s only been round 1970 that Lomilomi has even been taught outside of the family. Many Native Hawaiian customs have been protected and perpetuated and are still practiced today. Now, we have Lomilomi happening in many places throughout the world. Lomilomi encompasses many different \u2018styles\u2019, each unique to their geographical location and\/or their family of origin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are primarily two styles of Lomilomi that have become well-known: the \u201cTemple Style or Kahuna bodywork\u201d and \u201cAunty Margaret\u2019s Style\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aunty Margaret Machado<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1916-2009), the first native Hawaiian to receive her massage licence, defined lomilomi as \u201cthe loving touch, a connection of heart, hands and soul with the source of all life\u201d. In the \u201870s, she began to share her work, especially the spiritual teaching of Lomilomi, Ho\u2019oponopono, healing chants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kahu Abraham Kawai\u2019i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(1940-2004) from the island of Kauai. He developed a style of Bodywork called\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">romi kaparere<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mostly known as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kahuna Bodywork<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temple-style<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is this style of Lomilomi that became very popular in Europe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_media_grid element_width=&#8221;6&#8243; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1606915078933-357c02a2-1b61-6&#8243; include=&#8221;3753,3754&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hawaiian history is the same history as every culture throughout the globe. What Hawaiians are sharing is a <\/span><b>model of healing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with their own Hawaiian teachings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They inspire others to also look back into their own indigenous practices and ignite the flame of remembering.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the warm genuine Hawaiian hospitality through <\/span><b>the spirit of Aloha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> teaches us lessons of <\/span><b>peace, kindness, compassion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>responsibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>future generations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These lessons are expressed through chant, music and cultural practices such as the Honi **<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Hula is much more than a dance, more than storytelling, hula is a practice through which Hawaiians connect with natural foundations and ancestral wisdom. **<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honi: The\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawaiian<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Kiss. &#8220;The honi is a Polynesian\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greeting<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in which two people\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greet<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0each other by pressing\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noses<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and inhaling at the same time.
